Confirmation Class Health Kits: The 2010-11 confirmation classes are taking an active role in helping out Haiti. We are making Health Kits that will be distributed to those who had to flee their homes and have nothing. This project is supporting Lutheran World Relief efforts. We are asking the congregation for their support through donations (please keep to the specific requests) or monetary support. We thank you in advance for your support. The following list is what will go into each kit. We are looking for donations for an entire kit, or individual items:
One hand towel, dark color recommended
One washcloth, dark color recommended
One bath-size bar (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in its original wrapping
One adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging
One sturdy comb, remove packaging
One metal nail file or nail clippers with file attached, remove packaging (do not substitute cardboard emery boards for the file)
Six Band-Aids® (or similar brand), preferably 1/2" to 3/4" secured together with a rubber band
Monetary contributions: Many have asked about where to send monetarycontributions for Haiti earthquake relief. St. John’s is receiving contributions that will be sent out to one of the relief agencies listed below. If you want to contribute to this, please make your check payable to St. John’s and write “Haiti Earthquake” on the memo line. You can send this to St. John’s at the church’s address: 5952 Franconia Road Alexandria, VA 22310. LCMS World Relief and Human Care is working cooperatively with LCMS World Mission, Haitian missionaries, and partner churches to provide relief in a timely fashion. American Red Cross -To help, people can make an unrestricted donation to the International Response Fund at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767). The public can also help by texting "Haiti" to 90999 to send a $10 donation to the Red Cross, through an effort backed by the U.S. State Department. Funds will go to support American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.

Orphan Grain Train has also prepared to ship 513,216 "Kids Against Hunger" meals next week by air and by sea. They are also receiving cash donations to assist with this effort. Learn more about it at their website.
Members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans are invited to contribute directly through Thrivent to take advantage of Thrivent’s matching $1 for every $2 contributed up to $500.

This is the time when we can show Christian compassion in our responses to a people in great need through a continuous outpouring of prayers from God's people for the people of Haiti and for the response effort and as we make a financial contribution towards the response effort.
