St. John’s has a long history of supporting immigrants to the U.S., especially those arriving after a crisis in their home countries. Most recently, efforts have focused on Afghans arriving after August 15, 2021. The connections made with students in our English language classes helped us understand their situation and devise a response.
What does a family need?
Since Fall 2021, we have provided short term funds for rent and food, found and rehoused lots of apartment furniture, purchased laptops, refurbished phones, and covered some educational and training expenses. Arriving families have many different circumstances that there is no one right answer.
