Connect with Others

While at St. John’s, you can make connections in many ways. We are a disciple building center. We want to become like Jesus through baptism, and training by Jesus, so we can participate with Jesus on his mission, as invited, as a daily, intentional, lifestyle. All of this by the grace of God. While learning how to be disciples ourselves, we help each other. This does not require doing more. It is a change in lifestyle and focus. Making connections makes it easier. Your route on the adventure is personal and unique. We are all individuals, practicing together. Several activities have been helpful for us when applied over time.

  1. Be a regular attender in worship. Participate in the liturgy. Rest in God’s peace. Say hello to the person sitting next to you.
  1. Be intentional in prayer and in Bible / Scripture reading. Learning what God teaches in His Word and practicing what we know is how we grow as disciples and followers of Christ. If you are an adult with children, explore the options for children and young people here. All adults can join any of these activities:
  • Adult Education - Sunday Morning Classes (9:15 to 10:15am), held in the Fellowship Hall.
  • Adult Education - 2nd and 4th Wednesday Mornings (10:00am to 11:30am) held upstairs in Room 307.
  • Men's Ministry - first Saturday morning of each month for breakfast and a study session at 7:30am. Check with the office or calendar for exact location.
  • A woman's Bible study meets once a month on Saturday. For 2025 they are working through the Gospel of John. New book starts in January 2026. Contact the office for a connection.
  1. Be in a small group and receive regular encouragement and foundational growth.     Small groups or huddles or missional communities - they all serve a purpose, with varying formats. Find something that fits your lifestyle and household needs. Meeting frequency varies.

    • Several Small Groups meet regularly and focus on either Scripture or faith-filled living practices. Most are open to new members. Click here to view small groups open to new members. Ask to join any that are of interest. That sends an email to the leader who should get back to you.

    • You can start your own study or group. If what is offered does not fit your schedule, please talk to the Pastor and find a way to get what you need. There are many people willing to co-chair groups or help others start new groups.

    4. Help others, be of service, in an area or issue you are passionate about. Explore new areas. Listed here are some of our opportunities open to all, working on and off campus. Look for areas of service that interest you. A more complete list of groups is found at this link. If you want more information about a specific group, once you have found one, select the JOIN button and an email will be sent to the group leader. That person should get back in touch with you.

Let us know how we can serve you. Many in our congregation are in Northern Virginia on a temporary basis for work reasons. We understand short stays. When or if you do finally move to a new home, we pray that your time interacting with the people, ministries, and processes of St. John's served you and God's Kingdom well. Should you want to make St. John's your home congregation and become a member, we hold a class 2 times a year called Discipleship 101 (or D101). It meets on Sunday mornings before worship for 7 sessions.  In that time, you refer to Scripture and Luther's Small Catechism and explore (1) our faith as Lutheran Christians and (2) our life together at St. John's. All materials are provided. You can register for this class here. If you have any questions, please contact the Church Office by email or telephone (703) 971-2210.
