President Message - July-August 2019

Women’s Leadership Conference

Last week I attended a women’s leadership conference in DC.  I have always had a passion for mentoring, and this conference was going to devote a lot of the agenda to one of my favorite topics.  The first speaker started with her list for success (yay lists! I love lists!) and one of the first entries was “No Entitlement” which she defined as “deliver value before you expect anything in return.”  My mind leaped immediately to Colossians 2.

Seems like a vast leap, but not really – I had been studying it on the bus commute into DC for my upcoming Bible study meeting.  Specifically, Colossians 2, verse 6 says, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, (7) rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

I have been baptized, confirmed, and joined my church community.  I am saved by grace.  Job complete, right?  Yes, but no.  As Christians, and Lutherans, the gift of being redeemed by the life of Jesus isn’t the end of the “work.”  We must “continue to live our lives in Him,” not in expectation of accolades or praise, but because doing so keeps us rooted and strengthened in the faith.  Living our lives in Him is what delivers value to the world.

Also on her list for success: drive, determination, dedication, courage and be an inspiration.  The speaker meant this as what it would take to succeed professionally, but to me, it was a great rally cry to continue to grow my faith.

Sincerely,

Elisabeth Auld, Council President
