The Koinonia Foundation, Inc. is a faith-based, non-profit organization providing both short-term emergency assistance and self-sufficiency services to residents of the Franconia/Kingstowne district. Koinonia helps qualified clients meet challenges of daily living by providing food, clothing, learning, and emergency financial assistance, regardless of their beliefs. Every part of Fairfax County is covered by a recognized help agency of this type. We support the one closest to our church campus. Get involved with St. John’s as we support the efforts of Koinonia in the following ways:
- Share Sunday (the first Sunday of each month) - bring in non-perishable food items and place them in the shopping cart outside the Sanctuary doors. Here is list of Food Pantry needs.
- August Angels – Lists of needed back-to-school supplies are shared in July for collection and distribution in August.
- Thanksgiving Food Baskets - a Needs List of required items will be shared in mid-October.
- Thanksgiving Worship Service collections - Fill the bags you get 2 weeks out and bring them to the altar during Wednesday night worship.
- Christmas Wishes – A tree just outside the sanctuary doors will appear in November. Take a star and purchase a gift for a child described.
- Christmas Food Baskets - a Needs List for required items will be shared in mid-November.
- Volunteer in the Koinonia food and clothing pantry. Complete their volunteer registration form to get started.
- Volunteer as a coordinator of St. John's Koinonia programs and donations - talk to the person at the Welcome / Next Steps Desk. They will get you connected.
The name Koinonia comes from a Greek word found multiple times in the New Testament of the Bible (some references are Acts 2:42-47, 1 Corinthians 10:16, Philippians 3:10, Hebrews 13:16, and 1 John 1:3-7) and it is dense with meaning. It refers to the spiritual fellowship that believers in Jesus Christ have with God once they receive the Holy Spirit. It also describes the spiritual and physical communion that believers in Jesus Christ have with each other and the outpouring generosity that their salvation produces.
